High School Jane Lofton shared this fun "Ode to Librarians" video from Flocabulary. It could be a fun way to introduce students and parents to the school library.

Follett Challenge - student video contest

Follett is having a student video contest.  Here is a video worth voting for!  See the Follett Challenge: an invitation to the education community to promote the role that school libraries play in encouraging and developing information literacy and student engagement. 


There are six prizes, ranging from $10,000 to $35,000.  Winners are determined by votes. Check them all out.  Voting is this summer.

There are a number of student video contests to promote the value of school libraries.  This one supports the American Association of School Libraries marketing program for its national school library standards, Learning4Life.

The American Association of School Libraries (AASL), CISCO, SchoolTube, and Mackin have announced a "Learning4Life In My School Library" student video contest.

Submission Process (see more details on the website)

All entries to be submitted on SchoolTube.com between January 4, 2011 and March 18, 2011.

Follow these steps to enter:

1. Register under your school for a free SchoolTube.com account. You will receive an e-mail confirmation with information on logging into SchoolTube.

2. Review all contest rules for the Learning4Life In My School Library Student Video Contest on this page.

3. Complete this Contest Entry & Video Release Form and e-mail to learning4life@ala.org or fax to AASL at 312-280-5267.

4. Click the Enter Now Button on the website to submit video into the contest. Submission entry will begin on January 4, 2011 and the deadline for the submissions is March 18, 2011.

Student Video Contest

Here's a good opportunity to loan your Flip video to students in the new year:
The American Association of School Librarians, SchoolTube, and Cisco are teaming together to present the Learning4Life in My School Library Student Video Contest. Students are encouraged to create videos detailing how their school library and technology empower them to be Learners4Life and upload their creations to the video contest page hosted on SchoolTube.com. Submission entry begins January 4 and ends March 18, 2011. One student winner will be chosen from each grade level – elementary, middle, and high school. Winners will receive a Flip™ video camera and a prize for their school library program. Winning entries will be featured on the AASL, SchoolTube, and Cisco websites and social networking platforms. For more information on contest rules and guidelines, visit the Learning4Life in My School Library contest page.

These rules should also fit California's new Model School Library Standards.

Snapshot Day - ANIMOTO PROMO

Once a year, libraries of all kinds take a "snapshot" of their library. This includes data points such as the number of visitors, books checked out, courses taught, photos of what was going on at the library on one day. Here is a mini-music video or animoto of Snapshot day at Granite Bay High School, posted by Julianna Hedstrom Teacher Librarian.

The snapshot captures lots of students on computers, in Julianna's classes on research techniques. Says the learning center is open for students before school, after school, and during lunch. Photos of wall signage (Research Lab) and promotions (Banned Books Week).  Check it out.

Well said!  FRESNO USD Superintendent Michael Hanson won the California School Library Association's 2010 Administrative Leadership Award.  The award honors administrators with direct responsibility for a schoo or group of schools who havemade influential, unique and sustained contributions to effective school library program, furthering the integral role fo the library programs in elementary and/or secondary schools.

Our cerebrum is a library - a Video by Yu Ming (Singsfish)

Chinese student Yu Ming created this animated short film (3:25) that compares the brain to a library, where “the books kept in the library are like our memories. Sometimes we will be immersed in them subconsciously.”  Love the art and classical, hypnotic music.

Where Do Good Ideas Come From? -- Conversations and Reading?

Listen to author Steven Johnson's compelling presentation on "Where good ideas come from", then think about how libraries provide 1) the space for conversations and good ideas to percolate and 2) books and other content for individuals to feed good ideas.  How can this presentation or message be used to promote libraries and their programs (book clubs, lecture series, author visits, community gatherings) as incubators for good ideas and innovation?

Libraries -- We Will Survive

Japan's Bullet Train Library

The Japanese city of Akishima, Tokyo converted a decommissioned bullet train (Shinkansen) locomotive into a children’s library in order to make a trip to the library exciting for young readers. Fun academic library video, "New Spice. Study Like a Scholar, Scholar" asks: "Do you want to be a scholar? Then study at the Harold B. Lee Library. Do your research here, study here, and be a scholar!" This is from the Brigham Young University Library.

The American Library Association announces its Library Advocacy Day video winner today -- June 1st. There are nine web video contest "finalists".

Art and Film students need to build their personal portfolios, so let's give them some opportunities.
