The California Library Association eNewsletter alerted me to "The Silent Crisis" video about the consequences of low literacy: impacts health care system, employment, productivity, poverty, crime, school system. There is a related Facebook site on 1,000,000 for Literacy: Shatter the Silence.
Each time I tutor a young child at my local elementary school, I feel that I'm making a big difference in one person's life. At the same time, I am reminded that there are thousands or millions of children could also use the one-one attention.
